"imaginative, quick in colour, corporeal, sexy...a masterclass in love-swept changeability.”

Based on their celebrated 2020 recording of the same name, violinist Théotime Langlois de Swarte and lutenist Thomas Dunford illuminate the nuanced themes of yearning and loss that form the 17th-century English notion of melancholy. In this duo program, the inconsolable, titular Mad Lover is reimagined as a character from the reign of Charles II. His story unfolds through music laden with intense desire and theatricality, penned by violin virtuosos such as the prodigiously gifted Nicola Matteis. Exuberant, uninhibited, and unignorably eloquent, The Mad Lover throws open the doors to bewildered intoxication, braiding the beguiling nuances of unrequited love and despair that continue to echo in the popular music of our time.
