“International festival aims to delight, unite, and inspire” – YALE NEWS
Ovations kicks off our 91st season with a lively and immersive community dance party. Featuring a high energy live band and guided dance instruction, this unique event invites all to enjoy the spirited and beloved western Indian Gujarati folk dances of garba and raas. The clapping, spinning and bright colors of garba commemorate wedding celebrations and the vivacious Hindu festival Navratri. Celebrating cultural heritage through ecstatic movement and music — all ages, abilities, and backgrounds are invited to join the excitement that has energized communities across the country from Lincoln Center’s Midsummer Night Swing to Chicago Summer Dance to New Haven’s International Festival of Arts and Ideas, Yerba Buena Garden and now Portland. Fun for the whole family, those with two left feet and even those who’d rather sit back and watch the fun. Our afternoon together in Deering Oaks Park in Portland has two staggered start times of community fun. Come and go as you can to watch and experience the dance party of the year.
