Experience TALAGA: Where Dance, Performance, and Community Meet

Dear friends,

Since 2023, Portland Ovations has been in partnership with Maine-based foundation Ellis-Beaureguard Foundation (EBF), based in Rockland, to deliver their annual Choreographer’s Award, which includes presentation by Portland Ovations as part of the national prize and recognition. It is a highly competitive process that draws submissions from across the country. The invaluable partnership with EBF enables Ovations to take both artistic and financial risks, bringing thrilling dancemakers to Maine that might not otherwise be a household name.

In May we will introduce Portland audiences to Jay Carlon, his artistic partner Micaela Tobin and their collaborative work, TALAGA. Jay’s work is at the intersection of dance, performance and community happening. Part presentational, part ritual, he invites audiences to be part of the creative process in a way that is ephemeral in the moment yet long lasting in its effect. And, there is almost always food, like there will be on May 7th.

Jay’s work, both highly personal and expansive, is also about creative place making, searching for meaning, connection and collaboration. Last spring when we toured Mechanics’ Hall in anticipation of his engagement, Jay was immediately captivated by its beauty and sense of history. You could hear and see his imagination at work as he thought about ways to incorporate this special place into TALAGA.

While we always say no two live performances are alike, this is especially true in works like TALAGA, where it can only be because of who is there. We hope you will be. Please join us on May 7th for what promises to be an unforgettable evening of dance and community.

With kindness and gratitude,

Aimée M. Petrin
