Portland Ovations Deepens its Commitment to Drag: Monét X Change Just Announced; Drag Story Time Returning!

Portland Ovations is excited to announce the addition of Life Be Lifin’ starring the dynamic Monét X Change to the 2024-25 season. In line with its commitment to celebrating and supporting the art of drag, Portland Ovations is proud to bring this electrifying performance to the State Theatre in Portland on Saturday, January 25, 2025, at 8 PM. Tickets are currently available for Ovations Members and will go on sale to the public on August 23. For more details, visit PORTLANDOVATIONS.ORG.

This show promises to be as vibrant and captivating as the performer herself, offering an unforgettable experience for all who attend.

“We are thrilled to announce the addition of drag queen, opera singer Monét X Change to our 94th season,” says Aimée M. Petrin, Ovations Executive & Artistic Director. “Presenting drag artists who are dynamic and thoughtful storytellers is one of the most exciting and nuanced dimensions of our season. The performance by Monét X Change, along with the continuation of Drag Storytime, demonstrate some of the many ways Ovations is committed to sharing the vibrancy and significance of drag and the peoples, communities and stories these incredible artists represent.”
Monét X Change never wanted to be a drag queen. She never wanted to be an opera singer either. Now an R&B singing, theatre writing, comedic triple threat, Monét explains on stage with just herself and a mic how she became those exact things. With the ability to make audiences cry as quickly as she makes them laugh, Monét X Change guides her audiences through a poignant, darkly humorous coming-of-age story in her newest one woman show, Life Be Lifin’
The beloved Drag Storytime Series returns for the 2024-25 season, bringing audiences closer to the art of storytelling. Featuring Maine drag artists Ophelia and Chartreuse Money, the program aims to nurture literacy and self-esteem within a safe, creative, and joyful environment. Drag Storytime follows the principles of Drag Pedagogy, a teaching methodology emphasizing play, imagination, transformation, bravery, and community. All Drag Storytime events are free to attend and dates and times will be announced soon.

“Drag Storytime continues to be a necessity in our communities, not just here in Maine, but across the country,” says Chartreuse Money. “At a time when queer art is being villainized in the media, it’s more important than ever to show our youngest and most impressionable members of our community that being yourself if the most important thing you can be.”
