To welcome Kingdom Choir and better understand their musical selections, presentation, and history join us for a walk along Portland’s ‘Underground Railroad’ lead by artist Daniel Minter, Reverend Kenneth Lewis, and Portland City Councilor Pious Ali, concluding with an engaging talk by Reverend Lewis. What is the “gospel” in gospel music and what are Maine’s touch points to this musical form? The walk raises awareness of and honors the tragedy of African enslavement and the struggle of enslaved Africans to access freedom through the Underground Railroad to Canada, as well as Maine’s role in this effort and abolition more generally. Minter created the plaques for the trail and discusses its history and opening, while Ali adds details about the current plight of those fleeing violence and seeking refuge in Portland. The walk begins at Green Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church, proceeds down a shortened Underground Railroad trail, and returns to Green Memorial.
