To welcome Kingdom Choir and better understand their musical selections, presentation, and history join us for a walk along Portland’s Freedom Trail lead by artist Daniel Minter, Reverend Kenneth Lewis, Alain Nahimana, and Portland City Councilors(s) Jill C. Duson & Pious Ali, concluding with an engaging talk by Reverend Lewis. What is the “gospel” in gospel music and where are the Maine connections to this important musical form? The walk raises awareness of and honors the tragedy of African enslavement and the struggle of enslaved Africans to access freedom through the Underground Railroad to Canada, as well as Maine’s role in this effort and abolition more generally. Minter created the plaques for the trail and discusses its history and opening, while Ali, Nahimana, and Duson add details about the current plight of those fleeing violence and seeking refuge in Portland. The walk begins at the Abyssinian Church and proceeds down a shortened Freedom Trail, and returns to Green Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church.
