Cuba’s Malpaso Dance Company will share techniques from both their Cuban School of Ballet & their Cuban Modern Dance repertoire at the Casco Bay Movers dance studio on Forest Avenue. This masterclass will warm up with the Cuban style of ballet and techniques, then transition to and conclude with Cuban Modern Dance techniques.
The Cuban School of dates back to 1948. The Cuban style of ballet follows the classical Russian system with a unique expressive flare that stems from European, Latin and American cultural roots.
Cuban techniques of modern dance are a fusion of North American Modern Dance (including (Sokolov), Graham, Limon, Cunningham), European ballet, and traditional Afro-Cuban dances and rhythms.
The central teaching of this masterclass is based around contraction and release technique, combined with spine undulation movements from Afro-Cuban dance styles. The across-the-floor combinations encourage a focus on rhythm and musicality. The combination of influences (American, European and Afro) within Cuban dance provide the students a uniquely transcultural experience of movement.
This class is taught by Dailedys Carrazana Gonzalez, Founder, Associate Artistic Director and Dancer, Malpsaso Dance Company
