Pre-Performance Lecture: Schubert on His Lonely Rock: Der Fruhling Will Komen

Saturday, December 7, 2013 · 2-2:45 pm

The virtuosity, technique, imagination and communicative power of two-time Grammy Award winner Richard Stoltzman have revolutionized the world of clarinet playing. He is credited with bringing the clarinet to the forefront as a solo instrument, and remains one of the world’s most important clarinetists. He is joined by pianist David Deveau, who has appeared with major orchestras and in recital across the U.S. and abroad, and Sarah Shafer, a rapidly ascending soprano praised for her “luminous voice” and “intensely expressive interpretations,” (The New York Times). Their recital features Schubert’s “Shepherd on the Rock” and the Brahms Sonata No. 1 in F minor, Op. 120.

Program:
ROBERT SCHUMANN: Fantasiestücke, Op.73
LOUIS SPOHR: Seches Deutsche Lieder, Op. 103
LEONARD BERNSTEIN: Sonata for Clarinet and Piano
JOHANNES BRAHMS: Sonata for Clarinet and Piano in F minor, Op. 120, No. 1
FRANZ SCHUBERT: Der Hirt auf dem Felsen, D.965
Not all pieces to include clarinet, piano, voice. Subject to change.
