Merrill Auditorium, Portland, MainePortland Ovations regrets to announce that Sir James Galway will be unable to appear in Portland as the special guest during the "From The Top" presentation on March 24th. Sir James suffered a fall in December, injuring his hand and wrist. He has required corrective surgery and sadly has been forced to cancel all engagements through March. We wish him a speedy and complete recovery. The concert and recording of "From The Top" will go on as scheduled.
From the Top – National Public Radio’s showcase for young musicians, hosted by acclaimed concert pianist Christopher O’Riley – comes to Portland Ovations for a live recording of the hit program. Since its inception, many have become devotees of one of the most popular and fastest-growing classical music programs on radio and television. The mix of serious music, light-hearted skits, and informal interviews spotlights the talent and passion of the young musicians, bringing new listeners to classical music and satisfying longtime followers. The program, which will be taped for national broadcast on NPR, will feature outstanding young artists from Maine and beyond.
The young artists being profiled include Josie and Sophie Davis, teenaged violin playing sisters from Waldoboro, Maine. Josie, 18, and Sophie, 15, will perform Largo ma non tanto from Concerto in D Minor by Johann Sebastian Bach and will be accompanied by Christopher O'Riley, host of the show. Both sisters have participated in the Kneisel Hall Maine Young Musicians Program.
Also from Maine is Wilson Bristol, 17, from Freeport. Wilson has elected to leave high school early and has enrolled at the University of Southern Maine's School of Music. He is a gifted pianist and will perform Tocacata from Dianne Goolkasian Rahbee's Sonata No. 1.
A close neighbor to Maine, Anna DeLoi, 14, from Plaistow, New Hampshire, a student of the New England Conservatory's Preparatory Division, will play Valse by Arnold Bax on her harp. Anna is also a member of New England Conservatory's Youth Symphony.
Clark Pang, 14, a cellist from Orinda, California will perform Adagio from Samuel Barber's Cello Sonata Op. 6 and will also be accompanied by Christopher O'Riley. Clark is a student at San Francisco Conservatory's Preparatory Division and has played for Yo-Yo Ma's Masterclass.
And, a trumpet trio consisting of Acadia Kocher, 16, from Columbia, Maryland; Dominic Favia, 16, from Vienna, Virginia; and Michael Harper, 17, from Annapolis, Maryland will round out the collection of young artists by playing a traditional arrangement of Chiapanecas by Rafael Mendez and will be accompanied by both Christopher O'Riley and members of the Portland Youth Symphony Orchestra.
