Sunday, January 18, 2009 7 pm
Merrill Auditorium, Portland, Maine
Special Notice: Sunday, January 18, 2009
Today’s Sweet Honey in the Rock Events Will All Go on as Scheduled
Sweet Honey in the Rock arrived in Portland this morning and all of today’s events at Portland’s Merrill Auditorium will go on as scheduled, including the 7 pm concert by Sweet Honey and the combined Maine gospel choruses. If you attend today’s events and wish to stay in Portland for the evening, the Holiday Inn by the Bay at 88 Spring Street is offering a special room rate to Sweet Honey ticket holders due to the inclement weather. The room rate is $75 plus taxes for the night; simply present your Sweet Honey in the Rock ticket stub at check-in to take advantage of this special rate while rooms are available. If you are unable to attend tonight’s performance due to the poor weather conditions, you may exchange your ticket for a ticket to any other event in this PCA season through May 6, 2009, with the exception of the Yo-Yo Ma PCA endowment benefit performance on February 26. There will be no refunds. Tickets must be exchanged by Saturday, February 28. To exchange your ticket(s), please call PortTix at 207-842-0800 beginning Tuesday, January 20, or visit the PortTix Box Office at Merrill Auditorium (regular box office hours are Monday to Saturday, noon to 4 pm. The box office will be closed on Monday, January 19 in observance of the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday). Presented in association with NAACP Portland
The Sweet Honey experience is like no other. These six women have inspired audiences for thirty-five years with their spirited call for a more just and humane world. Their glorious voices blend in a mix that celebrates the sacred music of the African-American church – spirituals, gospels, and hymns – as well as the blues, jazz, reggae, doo-wop, and rap. Honoring the eightieth birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King and the hundredth anniversary of the NAACP, Sweet Honey weaves songs, stories, and movement to challenge injustice, encourage activism, and honor love. A community gospel choir featuring Maine singers will open the celebration. With ASL interpreter.
