A Far Cry featuring David Krakauer : Offstage Activities
When skilled musicians bring flawless technique to their instrument, there is no impediment to communicating an emotional power that is as mysterious and otherworldly as it is transformative. Similarly, mystics in the Islamic, Jewish, and Christian traditions incorporate music into their disciplined spiritual practices, whose mastery helps them transcend the merely human and experience the God beyond the gods.
Using video and audio clips, Burke Long previews Far Cry’s program “Dreams and Prayers,” and discusses connections between music and mysticism. He invites you to discover your own spiritual resonance with chant like melodies of Hildegard von Bingen, the fraught sounds of klezmer, and musical evocations of Sufi mystical dance.
Burke O. Long is Kenan Professor of Religion and the Humanities Emeritus at Bowdoin College. He is a historian of religion, musician, and photographer.
The Pre-Performance Lecture will take place in the Rehearsal Hall at Merrill Auditorium.
