On Stage with Bill Cosby
“A watched pot never boils,” that is the first line in the only play I ever performed in while in high school. It’s all I remember now, and sadly, it was all I remembered that night, which did not bode well for a life in the theater. I think of that experience almost every time I step out on stage to give my pre-performance welcome. I also think of it every time someone asks – “Do you perform?” “OH NO!” I always respond. “My role is backstage.”
Well… that all changed Saturday night. Suddenly, with no warning I was thrust back into the spotlight, center stage with the iconic Dr. Bill Cosby. I was shaking from my toes all the way up. I feared I was wasting everyone’s time. (To which my husband later asked, “At what point did you realize you were not holding up the show, you were the show?”) But somehow, I knew that Mr. Cosby, the consummate professional, the fatherly figure (who bears a striking resemblance to my Gramp, who predeceased the Gram Mr. Cosby called during the 5 pm performance) would not do anything hurtful and deeply embarrassing. It was in fact the safest I have ever felt on stage. And, for what it’s worth, ad libbing (better yet, conversing with Mr. Cosby) is a heck of a lot easier than memorizing lines.
If only Dad had been home when we called. Something tells me he’d have been prouder than that awful night of high school drama so many years ago. And it sure makes for a much better story. Now I have my Bill Cosby story … as do my Mom, Gram and husband.

At age 4,my daughter nicknamed her 1yr.old brother “Bud”.It’s from the Cosby show-Rudy’s friend. The name stuck.Growing up,many know this very blonde haired/blue eyed boy,“bud”. Even on report cards!Steven’s 21 & still carries this nickname ! What an honor to see this legend in real life! And the phone call to your husband was the best part of the show….loved it!

I bought tickets as a surprise gift for my 9 year old son. I grew up enjoy Bill Cosby and introduced him to my son, via albums, a couple of years ago. He was hooked. Bill’s joy, philosophy, and humor, to which all can listen, is refreshing. My son even brought a Cosby CD in hopes of having it signed. While that did not happen, he was more than thrilled to have been there and had the opportunity to laugh out loud with the rest of the audience.
A side note of disappointment was the number of camera phones flashing, and people going to the bathroom during the show. Very distracting, and quite rude.
Mom says:
It was an enormous pleasure talking with Dr. Cosby. I felt extremely comfortable “visiting” with him in spite of the fact that he is who he is (and didn’t know I was on stage). Gram considers it one of the highlights of her life and has enjoyed sharing her story with friends and family. I am so proud of Aimee. I was there for her highschool performance and still feel that ache. I’m relieved that she now has had a positive experience on stage (thank you Dr. Cosby). Dr. Cosby, you’ll have to return next year so you can meet Aimee’s sister Angella and her Dad. Bravo! Aimee.

I was at the 5pm show. Bill Cosby is a genius, but the off-the-cuff phone calls were over the top.
Your Gram was funny and warm. Your Mom was funny. And you were a gracious hoot. A wonderful way to start off a very fun and enjoyable evening with the ultimate family philosopher.

My husband and I were at the 5pm show (2nd row!)and we got a lot of laughs out of the phone calls to your parents and Gram. It was a great show, my face was sore from smiling so much. Hope that Mr. Cosby will come back to Maine next year!

I sat 3rd row, (your), right-stage-side: You and your husband stole the show - you were GREAT! Good Job! I remember Bill Cosby as a kid - he was my Dad’s favorite. He used to tell me “Bill Cosby can make your stomach ache without using one swearword!” My Dad ‘passed’ this year…seeing Coz, remembering my Dad - a fitting end to 2010. Thanks!!
