Making Music from Scrap Metal
Today’s Portland Press Herald had two articles about recycling. Ironically, we at Portland Ovations are hosting some events around a “green” theme this week as well: we are bringing ScrapArtsMusic to Portland for performances Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. But in addition to the upbeat performances on Tuesday night, there will be a panel discussion of “Greening the Arts” in Merrill Auditorium Rehearsal Hall from 5:30-6:30 pm with Gregory Kozak and Justine Murdy of ScrapArtsMusic, Elliott May from Reverb and Missi Labbe from EcoMaine. It’s free; you are welcome to join in the discussion. And as an extra incentive to think about how creatively we can use scrap and recycled materials to create great art, take a look at the art and instruments made by 5th grade students from Reiche Elementary in Portland as you enter the lobby of Merrill Auditorium. Lincoln Middle School and PATHS will exhibit some of the unique table scapes they designed and created from scrap metal for the tables at Portland Ovations’ Epicurean event. So, let us know how you are going “green” in your life. Tell us about your experiences with art or music made from recycled materials.

It was amazing! The best Merrill performance I’ve ever seen! The band leader didn’t talk to us like we were preschoolers, which doesn’t happen very often. Drummers focused on how they looked when they were playing, not just how they sounded! My favorite part was the first, and my favorite instrument the flying cow!

Wow, That was quite a performance I didn’t exactly like the drum part but the other parts were very entertaining. I only liked the drum part because it was made out of recycled things. Seeing what you can make such cool things out of nothing. But it was a fun time and a good experience and also gets me inspired I think I am gonna make a flying cow parade :). Also, My Favorite part was when you brought out the tube and then he played it with the white padded thingamabob and also I got to sit with my Best Friends :-P!!!!!!!! And now I am gonna say bye

I thought that performance was amazing, it was so cool that all of the stuff they used they made themselves out of scrap. My favorite was the “anoy-aphones” and the tubes, they sounded sooooooooooooooooooo cool.

I was among the older attendees, and I loved it. It was splendid entertainment, the orderly entrance and exit of the audience was impressive, the kids were adorable, attentive and well-behaved and the performers did not dumb down ther message or the words used to put it across. I especially liked the use of the word “gazelle,” always one of my favorites.
OVATIONS won one for the art of live performance; the whoops of wonder and delight from the kids would not have happened in front of a television set.

“Make a Little More Noise Goes Green” activities went to Riverton School today. Artist-educator Jerry Sanders worked with Mr. Chipman’s 5th and Kindergarten music classes with a crazy percussion version of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. The students were experimenting with making stories with sound.
